Pregnancy is considered to be a time of joy for new mothers. This is the time when they are pampered and their every wish is fulfilled (well almost every wish). There are however a few things that can cause discomfort and pain for an expectant mother. One of these is pregnancy heartburn.

The question that arises is why do some women experience heartburn while they are pregnant and other women do not?

Heartburn occurs when the digested food juices reflux back into your esophagus and throat. There is a valve that usually keeps the stomach acids in the stomach where the intestinal lining protects your body from the effects of the acid. This valve is called the lower esophageal sphincter, or LES. When the LES relaxes, the stomach acids reflux into the esophagus. This causes the lining of the esophagus, which is thin and unable to deal with the acid, to get irritated and inflamed.

With a pregnant mother heartburn does not occur only because of the digested food juices refluxing back into the esophagus and throat. The increased amounts of hormones in the body can soften the muscles that normally keep the LES closed. Thus if the LES relaxes at an inappropriate moment, then food and gastric acid reflux back into the esophagus.

There is also another reason that might contribute to pregnancy heartburn. During pregnancy a woman’s body goes through many changes to accommodate the growing baby. As the baby continues to grow within the womb, there is pressure put

upon the stomach. This pressure in turn may force the stomach acid to reflux through the LES into the esophagus. Thus causing pregnancy heartburn.

As there is no clear way to completely eliminate heartburn even during pregnancy, the most sensible approach to take is to minimize the discomfort that you may experience because of pregnancy heartburn. With a few simple precautions you can hold the heartburn at bay. Avoiding certain foods that are known to trigger heartburn can greatly reduce the chances of heartburn.

Avoid drinks containing coffee, tea, colas and alcohol as these can relax the LES and allow acid to reflux back into the esophagus. Also don't eat large meals. Instead eat several small meals throughout the day. Take your time eating, rushing through meals helps put unwanted pressure upon the LES. You also need to drink plenty of water in small amounts throughout the day.

When you go to sleep at night, keep your head elevated higher than your body. This position will keep your stomach contents in your stomach where they belong and not in the esophagus where they will cause pregnancy heartburn. During the day you should sit upright in a comfortable chair rather than slouching.

Gain a sensible amount of weight and stay within the weight guidelines your doctor suggests. Being pregnant does not mean suffering unduly because of heartburn, rather you can think of it as a change in your lifestyle. A change for a miracle of life, not for pregnancy heartburn.

Are we too impatient about getting pregnant?
I'm noticing a trend and I wonder if you see it too - people who are really upset when they don't get pregnant the first month or so that they are trying to conceive. If it works that way when you don't want to get pregnant, surely it works that way when you do want to get pregnant. The current recommendations are that you should seek help after twelve months of trying to conceive with well timed intercourse. (This number drops to six months if you are over 35.) I certainly think that there are <a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&zu=http://infertility.about.com/od/tryingtoconceive101/a/symptomsrisks.htm">times when you could be seen sooner</a> and certainly I'd advocate that everyone who wants to get pregnant should start with a <a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&zu=http://pregnancy.about.com/cs/gettingpregnant/a/planningpreg.htm">preconception check up</a>. That would be a great time to talk about ways to identify when you ovulate so that you can do your part for the well-timed intercourse portion. Laboring on Labor Day
Labor Day is next Monday in the US and I have always thought it was funny to be in labor on Labor Day. I actually came very close two years ago, having my daughter on Labor Day Weekend. Do you enjoy talking to other moms?
Talking to other pregnant women and mothers was something I didn't quite appreciate when I was pregnant as much as I realize now. It was the groups that I joined and the friendships that I formed with each of my pregnancies that really helped me learn and grow as a parent. Together as a collective group, all due around the same time, would discuss what was going on with our bodies and our babies. We'd share stories and offer advice. It was a really neat way to share what I knew and to learn from other moms. In the end we each made decisions that were right for us, but we all agreed that we felt supported and stronger because of the relationships. Years later, I'm still active in many of the groups I joined when I was pregnant. And we're still busy supporting each other as our kids grow. Pregnancy & Make Up
<img src="http://z.about.com/d/pregnancy/1/0/N/Y/3/makeupsm.jpg" alt="" /> I remember walking into work when I was about 13 weeks pregnant with twins. I hadn't told my co-workers about the babies yet, but they knew something was up. Finally one of the nice ladies from the front office came back with a bowl of chicken noodle soup, "Honey, you look awful! Just drained, maybe you need to go home and rest awhile." The problem was that I actually felt better than I looked! I didn't go into work again without putting on some blush. Beyond that my skin changed with each pregnancy. Fewer Babies Being Born
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is reporting that the provisional birth data for 2009 shows a 2.6% decrease in the number of births. They are estimating that 4,136,000 births occurs in 2009 compared to 4,247,000 births in 2008. In 2008 the numbers of babies being born to mothers under 40 is decreasing, though there is still a rise in births to mothers over 40. This may also be the case in the 2009 numbers, but we will need to wait for the final birth data. So why is the birth rate dropping? It's all speculation at this point, but the economic downturn could be playing a part in the lower birth rates. The economy started to drop off at the end of 2007 and the CDC said that they need to wait until all the data from 2009 is finished to make this connection stronger. Of course, then there are the weather related baby booms coming this year from all the <a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&zu=http://www.baltimoresun.com/health/bs-hs-blizzard-babies-20100826,0,1439473.story">storms last winter</a>. Who knows what 2010 will look like and whether or not it will continue this decrease. Thrifty Thursday: Packing for Labor
<a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&zu=http://pregnancy.about.com/library/howto/htpack.htm">Packing for labor and delivery</a> is always a fun task. Sure, you see people in the throes of labor, madly throwing things into a bag at the last minute, and while that happens, my bet is that most people plan way ahead for this one. When I was packing my <a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&zu=http://pregnancy.about.com/od/laborbirth/a/laborbag.htm">hospital bag </a>for my first baby, I think I started it around week 36. As I dutifully ran down the check lists of everything I was supposed to bring to the hospital, I realized that the tooth brush would need to be a last minute addition. But what if I forgot it and had to use the nasty hospital fake tooth brushes? So the obvious solution was to buy a new tooth brush. I'll admit it. I was being cheap. Who wants to shell out like $4 for a new tooth brush for the hospital bag, just in case you forget it? I mean seriously, it was $4 versus the nasty hospital fake tooth brush. I chanced it. The other day when I was preparing to go on vacation, I was at the dollar store and it suddently hit me - that was the perfect solution! For about $5 you could stock up on every health and beauty product that you would need for the hospital. Seriously, you can buy like six tooth brushes for a dollar. One for you and dad, and a few guests. You could add tooth paste and a brush... We are up to $3. Throw in a two pack of Chapstick and a bag of hair scrunchies and you're all set!
