New Pain Management Technique for After a C-Section

Flu Shots in Pregnancy
As the fall approaches, so does flu season. While there is a lot less hype about the seasonal flu and the H1N1 flu virus of 2009, pregnant women will still be given the option of receiving the regular flu shot. It is currently recommended that all pregnant women be given the seasonal flu shot by the <a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&zu=http://www.cdc.gov/flu/protect/vaccine/pregnant.htm">Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC)</a>. The nasal vaccine is not recommended. Pregnancy can lower your immune defenses and make you more susceptible to the flu. But it can also cause you to become more ill if you do get the flu. The flu shot will protect you and your baby from the flu. Your baby's immunity will last up to six months after birth. As with any treatment or immunization, you should talk to your doctor or midwife about the specifics for you. There are some reasons, like allergies to ingredients in the flu vaccine, that you may not wish to take the flu shot. The conversation with your midwife or doctor will help you make the best decision for you and your baby this flu season. Other things that you can do to help avoid the flu: <ul> <li>Wash your hands often</li> <li>Avoid people who are ill or have flu-like symptoms</li> <li>Breastfeed your baby as your immunities pass to baby</li> <li>Wear your baby, so that others aren't able to touch baby</li> </ul> If you do think you're ill, contact your provider. Keep your fever down with <a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&zu=http://pregnancy.about.com/od/medicationinpreg/qt/tylenol.htm">medications</a> and stay well hydrated. Don't try to push through it. Rest and take care of yourself to avoid complications like <a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&zu=http://pregnancy.about.com/od/pretermlabor/a/pretermlabor.-KJn.htm">preterm labor</a> and pneumonia. Are we too impatient about getting pregnant?
I'm noticing a trend and I wonder if you see it too - people who are really upset when they don't get pregnant the first month or so that they are trying to conceive. Don't get me wrong, I get why they'd be upset pregnancy-wise, but <a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&zu=http://pregnancy.about.com/od/gettingpregnant/qt/gettingpregnant.htm">realistically and statistically</a>, conception doesn't work that way. Part of it is, in my opinion, that we spend so much time worrying about avoiding pregnancy and thinking about birth control, that we honestly believe that one time we don't use birth control we'll get pregnant. If it works that way when you don't want to get pregnant, surely it works that way when you do want to get pregnant. The current recommendations are that you should seek help after twelve months of trying to conceive with well timed intercourse. (This number drops to six months if you are over 35.) I certainly think that there are <a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&zu=http://infertility.about.com/od/tryingtoconceive101/a/symptomsrisks.htm">times when you could be seen sooner</a> and certainly I'd advocate that everyone who wants to get pregnant should start with a <a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&zu=http://pregnancy.about.com/cs/gettingpregnant/a/planningpreg.htm">preconception check up</a>. That would be a great time to talk about ways to identify when you ovulate so that you can do your part for the well-timed intercourse portion. Certainly infertility is a problem, but you're not infertile if you've only been trying a month or two. My best guess is what you need to start with is some advice on charting your <a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&zu=http://pregnancy.about.com/od/gettingpregnant/qt/menstrualcycle.htm">menstrual cycle</a> to pinpoint <a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&zu=http://pregnancy.about.com/od/ovulatio1/a/signsovulation.htm">ovulation</a>. Budgeting for Breastfeeding
One of the important reasons that many families list for breastfeeding is that it is free. This is a true statement. But I'm here to offer you some advice. Set some money aside for breastfeeding costs. Laboring on Labor Day
Labor Day is next Monday in the US and I have always thought it was funny to be in labor on Labor Day. I actually came very close two years ago, having my daughter on Labor Day Weekend. Do you enjoy talking to other moms?
Talking to other pregnant women and mothers was something I didn't quite appreciate when I was pregnant as much as I realize now. It was the groups that I joined and the friendships that I formed with each of my pregnancies that really helped me learn and grow as a parent. Together as a collective group, all due around the same time, would discuss what was going on with our bodies and our babies. We'd share stories and offer advice. It was a really neat way to share what I knew and to learn from other moms. In the end we each made decisions that were right for us, but we all agreed that we felt supported and stronger because of the relationships. Years later, I'm still active in many of the groups I joined when I was pregnant. And we're still busy supporting each other as our kids grow. Shocking Link Between Pregnancy And Heartburn

Symptoms related to heartburn can be detected in different ways, such as a sensation of pain and burning just below the breastbone, indigestion, and a sour after-taste in the oral cavity. Heartburn is one of the symptoms afflicting pregnant women the most frequently. From different data, between 6 and 9 out of every 10 pregnant women will experience symptoms of heartburn at least once during pregnancy.

When the lower esophageal sphincter (LES) ceases to work properly, acids and gastric contents can get back into the esophagus. Infrequent heartburn may not be of great concern, but increased frequency can indicate a deeper, chronic condition called acid reflux or gastro-esophageal reflux disease (GERD). It is the unwanted transmission of bile, digestive enzymes and acids that then generates heartburn. These substances transfuse back from the stomach to attack lining cells inside the esophagus. The lower esophageal sphincter should normally act as a valve to keep the gastric contents in the stomach, without them escaping backwards in a healthy body.

Acid reflux is brought on by many causes. They include:

1. Acid forming foods being eaten to excess: for example, eggs, liver and wine will worsen the problem. Other difficult foodstuffs are those that lead to Candida overgrowth, digestive problems or allergies. Particular examples are meat and dairy products.

2. Poor sleep habits can negatively impact your immune functions. In this case, many related complications can arrive, including overgrowth of Candida, a digestive system that slows and becomes feeble and a build-up of toxins. These are all elements leading to acid reflux.

3. Excess body weight also puts pressure on the LES, forcing through more stomach juices and acids into the esophagus.

As

an additional difficulty during pregnancy, the uterus that enlarges can also put pressure on the abdomen that then acts on the stomach and the LES to force yet more stomach contents back towards the esophagus. During pregnancy, women may also have to battle with additional problems such as constipation, indigestion and bloating. In all, pregnancy in fact becomes a factor that can lead to GERD. Hormones that the body fabricates during pregnancy have a laxative effect on a number of muscle tissues that include the lower esophageal sphincter. Acid reflux is also intensified by a digestive process that loses its dynamism.

Pregnancy and GERD simultaneously makes a solution hard to find, as many medicaments are potentially risky for women who are pregnant. The drugs that do feature on physicians’ lists for pregnant women can themselves have certain unwanted secondary effects and in general it is difficult to recommend any of them in this case.
