Slings to Get Warning
The <a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&zu=http://cpsc.gov/">Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC)</a> is <a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&zu=http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/35782340/ns/health-kids_and_parenting/">preparing to release a statement</a> of warning for sling users. There have been some injuries and even seven deaths for infants in slings. Some of these accidents happened when there was equipment failure, like the sling broke and the baby fell out. Other concerns are the position of the baby and ensuring that the baby doesn't lay facing the wearer's body and smother in the clothing of the wearer. No specific sling manufacturer has been called out. While I believe that every parent should always consider that any product that you use has limits and risks. The CPSC notes many infant injuries and deaths every year from other products like baby cribs, strollers and toys. All infant gear should be used with a watchful eye, meaning that statement that says "Adult Supervision Required" means just that. So don't panic over the new announcement. Slings have simply gained enough popularity that there is now a notable number of people using them. And as that number goes up, warnings for using common sense must be used. Gaining Weight in Pregnancy
<img src="http://z.about.com/d/pregnancy/1/8/s/X/3/healthyeating.jpg" height=150 width=100> With my most recent pregnancy, I didn't gain as much as I had with previous pregnancies. Partly because it's just the way it worked out and partially because the newer recommendations are to gain a bit less these days. You're probably wondering what is going to happen with your <a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&zu=http://pregnancy.about.com/cs/symptoms/a/weightgain.htm">pregnancy weight gain</a>. Unfortunately, pregnancy is not the time to go carte blanche and eat all you want, you are still subject to adding those extra party pounds. Remember weight gain doesn't have to be the <a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&zu=http://pregnancy.about.com/od/signssymptoms/a/25signsofpg.htm">first sign of pregnancy</a>! I did read recently that the average weight gain, in general, is one pound over the holidays, but when you're pregnant it's more of making every bite count. So while you can still enjoy yourself, just remember that moderation is the key to avoiding those extra pregnancy pounds. In fact, in <a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&zu=http://www.greenjournal.org/cgi/content/short/110/4/752">one study</a> about pregnancy weight gain in women who are obese (BMI above 29), it is being said that not only do they not need to gain a lot of weight, but a neutral gain and even a loss may be perfectly acceptable for these patients. One of the studies talked about the benefits of weight loss in pregnancy, as far as preventing some diseases like <a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&zu=http://pregnancy.about.com/od/hypertensionpre/a/pihinpg.htm">pregnancy induced hypertension (PIH)</a>, <a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&zu=http://pregnancy.about.com/od/diabetes/a/gestdiabetes.htm">gestational diabetes (GD)</a> and it could even help lower the <a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&zu=http://pregnancy.about.com/od/cesareansection/p/cesarean.htm">c-section</a> rates. Though, as with any medical study there may be flaws. So before you jump on the band wagon, make sure you read an <a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&zu=http://junkfoodscience.blogspot.com/2007/10/science-by-press-release.html">alternate view</a> before you leap. VBAC Consensus - Mother's Stories
Yesterday I attended the National Institutes for Health Vaginal Birth After Cesarean Consensus Conference. I know that my first sign of pregnancy is different than most people - I get horribly, can't-get-your-head-out-of-bed exhausted. SIDS: A Personal Story
<img src="http://z.about.com/d/pregnancy/1/8/k/Y/nathan.jpg"> I'm sitting here today remembering my nephew, Nathan. It was actually about this time in the morning that I was getting the news that Nathan had died overnight. <a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&zu=http://pregnancy.about.com/cs/suddeninfantdeat/a/nathan.htm"> It was SIDS - Sudden Infant Death Syndrome.</a> Previously I had only heard of SIDS on TV in shows like Quincy or on the news. Nathan died in March 1992, it was just before the American Academy of Pediatrics published their "back to sleep" campaign starter in April 1992 to reduce the number of SIDS deaths. Thankfully it has worked for many parents as one of the ways to reduce the risk factors for SIDS. Do you know what the risk factors are and what you can do to help prevent SIDS in your family? Save on Pregnancy Pillows
Pregnancy pillows are all the rage to help you get comfortable and sleep well in pregnancy, particularly in those last few months when <a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&zu=http://pregnancy.about.com/cs/symptoms/a/sleeptips.htm">insomnia</a> is a real bear. While they sell big pregnancy pillows and small pregnancy pillows, pregnancy pillows that encircle you and pregnancy pillows that you lay on, the truth is - you don't need a pregnancy pillow. That said, I think that pillows to help you sleep are a huge benefit. You can simply choose to use more of your normal bed pillows creatively or you can use a standard body pillow. The truth is, many of these pillows are exactly the same, minus the jacked up price for the word pregnancy tucked in the front. Home Births Increase
<img src="http://z.about.com/d/pregnancy/1/0/G/q/3/m_still2.jpg" align=center>Today the Centers for Health Statistics at the CDC released data on the trends in home births and birth centers from 1990-2006. Considering some of the recent releases about increasing trends in prematurity and cesarean rates, it was nice to see that home and other out of hospital births are on the rise for low risk women. Here are some of the findings from the study: <ul> <li> Out of hospital birth comprised about 1% of all births. Two thirds of these births were at home and about a third at birth centers. <li> Home births increased by 5% in 2005 and stayed the same in 2006. <li> Home births were less likely to have preterm births and multiples. (Planned and unplanned are included in the data.) <li> 61% of the home births were attended by midwives, which is up from 43% in 1990. <li> Certified Nurse Midwife (CNM) births may be under reported, in all births, because of how these births are coded. </ul> While many will be tempted to say that this increase is due to the efforts of <a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&zu=http://www.thebusinessofbeingborn.com/trailer.php">The Business of Being Born</a> and <a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&zu=http://www.thebigpushformidwives.org/">The Big Push for Midwives</a>, these were not yet available for the years when this data was compounded. I think that when we see the influence that they have had in the years since their campaigns began we will see the numbers of home births and <a href="http://clk.about.com/?zi=1/1hc&zu=http://pregnancy.about.com/od/birthcenters/a/birthcenters.htm">birth center births</a> rise even more for low risk women. Home birth is certainly not for every woman. It is best for low risk women who have skilled care providers, though many women who would like to have home births are not able to find these care providers due to licensing issues in their states, though home birth is legal in all 50 states.
